Project description
Your engineering firm is hired to prepare a proposal for a client regarding an interstate highway pavement which meets the following design requirements:
1.15 Million ESALs per lane, per direction over a 20-year design life.
2.The project will be a four lane highway (two lanes per direction), 100 miles in length.
3.Climatic conditions are equivalent to those prevalent in central Kentucky.
4.Subgrade is a clay with CBR=2%, PI=45%.

You are responsible for preparing a comprehensive proposal which must address the following specific items:
1.Pavement design, construction, management, and maintenance for flexible AND rigid options.
2.Pavement drainage, stabilization, etc.
3.First cost as well as life-cycle cost comparisons plus optimization.

Your final recommendation must include but may not be limited to the following items:
1.Type of pavement: report your best rigid AND flexible pavement options from a set of options for each category using the AASHTO method. Repeat this using a second

design method, such as: Asphalt Institute, PCA, etc.
2.You must use mechanistic criteria (for example, KENPAVE) to analyze/validate your various design recommendation and check for their adequacy.
3.Report pavement management and maintenance recommendations.
4.Report summary cost estimates for each design option in terms of overall pavement cost for the entire pavement structure in terms of $ per lane-mile. You are

encouraged to include an appendix for unit costs of various items covered by your designs. Costs such as excavation, grading, signage, guard rails, striping will be

ignored in order to focus on the cost of the pavement.
