write a number of small 2 page position papers regarding a variety of issues as they relate
to the course (see syllabus). In these short papers, you will take a position on some issue and support
your position using arguments from both sides of the issue (in essence a pro-con on some specific
issue within the general topic). This position, however, shouldbe presented in an academic fashion
without the use of personal pronouns (I, My, Our, etc).
These are not intended to be a research paper, but you should be sure to show that you understand
the issue. If you do research, or use any material from another source (including those from the
course reading list), you need to cite it appropriately and include a separate bibliography page.
You must cite Mills’ Sociological Imagination in all position papers, thus you should include it
properly in the bibliography. You must also bring up the media we watch on the topics, connecting
it somehow even ifjust as an example.
Topics and due dates are listed on the syllabus. Keep in mind that these are BROAD topics meant
ONLY as a guide. You can choose to be as specific as you deem necessary, so long as you actually
take a position. There is a sample position paper on blackboard which should give some insight into
my expectations for an A paper (that one received a perfect score).
Since for many of you this might be the first time writing this tlpe of paper, I allow revisi’ –
first paper, and sometimes later ones. This way you cantry it out and see how you do and then ger
a chance to correct yourself.
Some common errors:
not connecting the paper to the concept of family
not applying Mills’ Sociological Imagination
not stating a clear position
over thinking and tryrng to research every detail
under thinking and only writing one page
not proofreading your paper
using personal pronouns
