Order Description

1-Consider the following discussion topic. Post your response on the discussion board. Then read through your classmates’

responses and respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings. You should contribute at least 3 posts to receive full

participation credit for this assignment. Be sure to go back and read everyone’s post.

(A REMINDER: When you respond to someone else’s post, make sure your reply adds to the discussion. Explain why you agree or

disagree with your classmate and provide factual evidence to back up your opinion. If your reply does not add anything new

to the discussion but simply restates another student’s answer, it will not receive full credit. Remember the point of the

discussion board postings is to have a meaningful discussion and demonstrate to me that you have read and understood the

material.)

Based on what you have learned from the readings and from watching the following videos, consider the following questions:

How has the definition and function of art changed and what role does “place” play?

2 -Discussion topic: A work of art can be confusing or even offensive the first time we look at it, but after learning more

we often come to a better understanding and appreciation of that same work.

An example of this is Manet’s Le déjeuner sur l’herbe, 1863

What is your first impression of this painting? How do you feel about it? Now watch the video conversation on this artwork.

Read the discussion of this artwork found in the textbook (page 410). How have your feelings changed? Discuss your

misconceptions about this work of art. How did learning more about this artwork change your understanding and appreciation

of it?

3- Choose a work of art from the textbook or from the smarthistory.org website that was not discussed in this week’s

materials and identify it for your classmates by providing the artist’s name, the artwork’s title, and the date. Also,

include where you found the image–ifs in the textbook include the page number and figure number, if its found on the

smarthistory website include the url address. Or if you’re able, include a copy of the image directly in your post.

Now try your hand at visual analysis. SPEND a few minutes actively looking at the work of art. Then, using what you have

learned this week, describe what you see in the work of art. Be sure to utilize some of the vocabulary you have learned in

the past two weeks.

Consider the following questions as you discuss the composition and pictorial space of the artwork:

Composition

Where is the focal point in this painting? How did the artist draw your eye to this spot?
What is the symmetry of this work? Overall is the composition symmetrical or asymmetrical? Explain.

Pictorial Space

How are the objects in this work placed within the picture plane, specifically what is in the foreground, middle ground,

and background?
Is the pictorial space shallow or deep? Explain how the artist conveyed this information.
Did the artist make use of linear perspective? If so, how can you tell?
Did the artist use atmospheric perspective in this artwork? If so, explain how and where.
Did the artist use foreshortening in this work? If so, discuss a specific example.

To refresh your memory, use this smarthistory video as an example of how to look at at work of art and describe what you

see:

Once you’ve posted your analysis, read through your classmates’ analyses and respond to at least two of your classmates’

postings. What can you add to their assessment? What else do you notice. Your comments should utilize the vocabulary from

the past few weeks and should add to the discussion. In total, you should contribute at least 3 posts to receive full

participation credit for this assignment.
