Physics of Motion

Project instructions:
? Two spaces after a period before the next sentence begins.
? Pictures are worth a thousand words. You can take pictures with a digital camera (or phone) and paste them into your report. Especially in the procedure section. Draw diagrams in Word, AutoCad, etc.
? Don?t make opinion statements.
? Don?t make statements you can?t back up, either with the data or a
reference.
? Watch out for the word ?then?. Some reports use it to excess.
? Don?t use phrases like ?the equation below shows…..?. Instead use ?Equation 1 shows…..?. That way if it flips to the next page, everything is still ok.
? Don?t talk about the software you used to plot or calculate unless it is a relevant point of the experiment.
Introduction
? Introduce the subject. Don?t assume the reader is familiar with what you are doing. Explain what you are doing and why. You don?t have to write the details of the procedure, but explain what you?re doing? Reason you are doing the experiment is to investigate some phenomenon and not to conduct a lab for a grade.

? Why is it important to do this experiment?
? What insight might you gain from this experiment to apply to other areas?
? In engineering, why is this important?
Theory
? Search for published results for comparison
? Search the internet for other sources (try Google Scholar for published
papers)
? Fully explain the theory behind what we are trying to measure.
Procedure
? DO NOT COPY FROM THE LAB MANUAL
? Tell what you did in detail.
? Make diagrams.
? Paste pictures (helps visualize what you did). Pictures not taken by you and
not referenced are plagiarism. So either take your own pictures or cite the
reference where you got them.
? Describe the experiment. Don?t assume the reader knows what you did.
Results
? All graphs are figures and should be labeled as such below. Tables are labeled above (see Text books for reference on how to do this) and figures are labeled below.
? Don?t just give the data. EXPLAIN IT. Don?t let the reader come to their own conclusions about the figures. YOU tell them the important features of the graphs and what they mean.
? Use Tables and Figures with proper captions and numbering. Don?t make the reader hunt for your diagrams. Come see me if you don?t know how to caption figures and tables.
? If you talk about figure 1, it has to be on that page or at least the next one. NOT two or more pages away. Don?t put a figure (or table) before you talk about it.
? No background color on graphs. Make it white. Conclusions
? Results and Conclusions are the most important sections. Don?t make conclusions something that you do in 2 minutes to finish up. Put some thought into it. It does not have to be long, but it should tie everything together.

? Conclusions are not observations.
? Tie the theory to results. If they are different significantly, why?
? Explain differences and possible errors. Don?t make yourself look stupid by
saying one possible error is that ?I am too stupid to read a tape measure? or the like.
References
? In Microsoft Word, go to references and set up endnotes. (see pictures on page 1) Come see me if you don?t know how.
? Reference section should be at the end of the document (after conclusions and before appendix)
? Use more than one reference. Search Google Scholar and find some technical papers that deal with the topic. Use them in the theory and cite them.
? Got to ?INSERT? tab and put a ?PAGE BREAK? right before the word ?References?. This makes it always be on its separate page.
