10 PERSONAL PORTFOLIO oF LEARNING AND APPLICATION (PPLA)
The purpose ofthis Professional Portfolio of Learning and Application is to:

0 enable you to record your experiences during placement and develop reflective practice skills

0 to help you consider competence based development

0 to develop a portfolio of evidence in line with the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF)

that illustrates your learning while on placement
Keeping the information within your portfolio is important for many reasons. All the information
gathered can be used by both yourself and others as evidence of your professional and clinical
development. Students completing short block placements will only collate a limited amount of
evidence as there will not be the time to consider all professional competencies. However, the skills
you acquire whilst completing your short block placement will be invaluable when completing the
portfolio during longer placement periods or other courses of study as you pursue a career as an
Audiologist. Remember completion of your degree and does not mean completion of your learning.
On the contrary it is just the beginning of your continuing professional development.
Organising your portfolio into a logical and specific order is also important. Within the first two years
of your post graduate working experience you will need to gather evidence of your development
and professional working for two major reasons. The first reason arises from the new NHS
Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF), on which review and development of all NHS staff is based.
KSF requires evidence of the appropriate application of knowledge and skills in order to progress
within a pay band. The KSF is divided into 6 core dimensions which are relevant to every post in the
NHS and 24 post-specific dimensions, at least 4 of which relate to Audiology. Each dimension has 4
levels to which are attached descriptions and indicators which describe how knowledge and skills
need to be applied at that level. In turn each post will have a corresponding outline stating which
dimensions and levels the post holder needs to work to. A review of your knowledge and skills
application will occur within 12 months of being appointed to a pay band or new post. Evidence of
your knowledge and skills application is therefore required for this review process.
The second reason relates to professional registration. All those with a BSc or MSc and CCC in
Audiology are currently eligible to apply for voluntary registration with the Registration Council for
Clinical Physiologists (RCCP) and/or Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as Hearing Aid
Dispensers. Both HCPC and RCCP require registrants to keep an up to date CPD portfolio. The skills
you learn completing this PPLA will be skills you will use to maintain your future professional
portfolios.
The requirements for each year require you to organise evidence of your professional practice that
you have gained over your placement (long and short block) into a format that can be utilised as a
working portfolio and built on in future years. The format provided is based on some of the core KSF
dimensions and the corresponding levels of the KSF that are required for the post of a healthcare
practitioner.
