Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

Plant Genetics Assignment (55‐208 Winter 2015) (    /12) Annona squamosa (custard apple) is a delicious aggregate fruit that grows in a number of tropical countries, including Australia.  Its availability in North America has been increasing over the past decade.  Since it is the white pulp of the custard apple that is eaten, there is interest in growing fruit that maximizes the amount of pulp produced.  Preliminary studies have indicated that fruit pulp production is determined by three genes (A, B, and C) and the greatest amount of pulp is found in fruits that are homozygous recessive for all three traits.  Using this information, answer the following questions.   Assume that there are no mutations or crossing over. (Be sure to include all necessary information and all calculations.) 1. Since this plant produces an aggregate fruit, what information do you know about its flower? (1 mark) 2. Describe the steps (processes and resulting cells) required for the formation of an embryo sac from a megaspore mother cell. (4 marks) 3. Pollen from a plant that is heterozygous for the A gene, and homozygous recessive for both the B and C genes is crossed with a plant that is heterozygous for the A and C genes and homozygous recessive for the B gene.  What is the probability that the resulting plant will produce fruits with the greatest amount of pulp possible? (7 marks)
