Summative coursework assessment
An essay on diagnostic methods based on extensive literature research. You can chose any disease or disorder where Clinical Biochemistry plays an important role in diagnosis or monitoring, use the journals and books recommended on the reading list to guide you. You need to review the method(s) employed in the diagnostic process and explore the research into these. You are expected to critically discuss any benefits, risks or limitations associated with the current diagnostic approach, the current state of research and the potential for future developments. The test(s) evaluated can include laboratory-based methods as well as Point-of-care testing or patient self-testing.
Current analytical practice should be outlined and critically evaluated. A good essay would also include a discussion of on-going research with the potential of developing new methods. In your essay you need to identify the biochemical marker(s) on which the analysis is based and summarise their biological function and relation to disease.
Further points to consider include the method of the test, the demand for testing, the potential for point-of-care or self-testing, specificity and sensitivity of the method and limitations of the analytical method as well as current research and potential future developments to improve the current method or develop alternatives.
Guidelines on writing your assignment Preparation
First, you have to clarify in your mind the issues that the assignment is raising. You should plan your assignment before writing it. Furthermore, during the collection of material and the writing of your assignment keep the assigned task firmly in mind.
Collecting material
To write an effective assignment, you will have to retrieve information from a variety of sources and before you can do this you must identify the key terms. You should start checking material available in scientific journals, books, reference works, periodicals, assignments and other kinds of publications. You should also only select material relevant to your topic or otherwise you may get bogged down in a mass of material. You must not rely on material from one source as your assignment will be dated, biased, and too general. Make sure you read and follow the instructions on referencing and citations.
Organisation of Material
Your assignment must have an introduction. In your introduction, you may define key concepts, outline the wider context of the topic, state the purpose of the assignment and the order in which the identified issues or problems are presented. This would give the reader an idea of what to expect and greatly increase comprehension. The assignment should be
sub-divided. Each sub-heading should be organized so that the reader will be able to easily follow the development of your argument. The sub-headings could be based on the main points identified in the introduction. Whenever possible, you should use illustrations, diagrams, maps, charts, and tables to support your arguments and enhance the presentation of your assignment. Remember, you must appropriately label and number all tables and figures, i.e. illustrations, diagrams and charts. You must also refer to them in the assignment. As you develop your line of argument, you must make it clear how your arguments in one place or section relate to others you have used or will use. You must have a conclusion related to issues raised in the assignment. It may summarize the facts, statements, ideas and findings presented in the review. You must then briefly state your interpretation of the main points raised in your review with a final comment or two. Finally, you must list all cited references at the end of your assignment.
Writing
Your assignment should be written in a style that is clear, concise, and impersonal. The tone should be business-like balanced and impartial. Each general statement must be supported by some referenced evidence, such as statistics, survey, or quotation from a recognized authority.
Structure of the essay Cover Page
Title and abstract
Give your work a descriptive title and write a short summary of your assignment. This should introduce the topic and summarise the main findings of your assignment and not exceed 200 words.
Contents Page
You should put your assignment into a rational order under various headings. This will help the reader to refer to sections, which he or she may wish to re-read for further clarification. All pages must be numbered.
Main Body of the Assignment
This includes a brief introduction to the topic, the structured development of the argument and conclusions highlighting the main arguments.
Figures and Tables
You are encouraged to support and illustrate your argument by including diagrams, tables and charts. You must reference these appropriately if you take them from a source or edit them based on someone elses work. Numbered figure and table captions that explain what is displayed must be included.
References and Citations
Basic rule: include a citation and list a reference for every idea or statement that is not your own.
You should read text books, journal articles and other sources to write your report and then cite these sources in the body of the text as well as list them in a reference list at the end. Failure to attribute the work to others is plagiarism. Copying chunks of text from a source is plagiarism even if the source is acknowledged, always paraphrase in your own words. Be sure you do not plagiarise as it is a serious academic misconduct and will be penalised.
A full reference list must be produced at the end of the assignment. There is only one accepted format of references.
If your work is based on less than 15 relevant references it is unlikely to receive a pass grade.
