Application: Political World Leaders of World War II
The policies of Roosevelt, Mussolini, Stalin, and Hitler shaped the events surrounding World War II. Each had rather differing opinions and took specific actions to achieve his nation’s desired outcomes. One leader’s decision is attributed to the start of World War II — the deadliest, costliest war in history, with approximately 70 million casualties worldwide.
At this time in history, as any time in history, citizens looked to their leaders to protect them and ensure their prosperity. What is it that these World War II leaders promised and subsequently provided to their citizens during this time in history? In your opinion, were these leaders capable and effective?
In this week’s Application, you will assess World War II leaders and the effectiveness of their policies, actions, and contributions. In addition you will choose a world leader today who shares the traits of the World War II leader you believe was the most effective.
To prepare for this Application:
Review Chapter 16, (pp. 228–2 39), Chapter 17 (pp. 241–2 53), and Chapter 18 (pp. 255–2 75) to understand the context in which World War II leaders rose. Also review the articles by Mussolini and Roosevelt and “The 25 Points: An Early Nazi Program” in this week’s Learning Resources to gain insight into the leaders you will examine this week.
Examine the policies, actions, and contributions of each world leader and their impact on the events of World War II. Use your completed World War II Political World Leaders Comparison Chart for reference. (The document is located in this week’s Learning Resources.)
Choose who you believe to be the most effective and the least effective leader during World War II. What is it about their policies, actions, and contributions that made them effective or ineffective?
Reflect on the promise and actions of great world leaders. What characteristics make them stand out?
Identify a current world leader who you consider to be effective. How could you compare this current world leader to the one you chose as the most effective leader from World War II?
The assignment:
Compose a 3- to 4-page essay in which you do the following:
Defend who you believe to be the most effective leader and who you believe to be the least effective leader during World War II.
Focus your essay on the policies, actions, and contributions of these two leaders to the events of World War II. (You can use your World War II Political World Leaders Comparison Chart as a personal reference tool for writing your essay, however you do not need to submit your chart as part of this assignment.)
Compare a present day effective world leader to the one you chose as the most effective leader from World War II. Focus on what exemplifies that leader’s effective leadership traits.
Support your assertions by making at least 2 references, in proper APA format, to your course readings.
