You will write a 1300-1500 word critical analysis of a specific popular cultural product/object or practice in relation to theories, approaches and concepts presented in the first 5 weeks of the course.

Appropriate and relevant examples will be discussed during the course, but examples could include a favorite Japanese soapie, Korean pop song or sub cultural practice or behavior, e.g. cosplay in Tokyo.

Your focus could even, for example, be the popularity of K-pop in Australia or the popularity of American dramas amongst young Malaysians, because each can be defined as part of ‘Asian popular culture’ – you will just need to clearly define and persuasively outline how you understand and are using the term ‘Asian popular culture’.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must choose a SIGNIFICANTLY different case study to that being undertaken in your team project. If you are unsure about your choice, it is your responsibility to confirm your choice with your tutor as early as possible.
The task requires you to apply, connect and examine course concepts and ideas in relation to a real-world popular cultural object, practice and/or context. The task requires you to critically consider core course concepts and themes, and to identify and unpack connections between these concepts, critical approaches and themes and specific Asian practices, experiences, and understandings of popular culture.

The task also gives you the opportunity to critically explore and discuss your in relation to practice in your profession/program or your future professional practice.
Remember: this is a RESEARCH task, so provide evidence of your research by explicitly citing the ideas behind your analysis, and where/who they come from.

You are expected to cite a minimum of FOUR academic sources to pass this assignment. Note: This is a minimum – making good use of a wider range of relevant research will almost certainly result in a stronger reflective analysis… and therefore a better mark.

You can also utilise non-academic sources, and refer to lectures and tutorials, but these DO NOT count among your FOUR ‘references’.
