Project description

read pp. 153-159 and 166-170 in carl zimmer & Douglas j Emlen, evolution making sense of life (isbn 9781936221172) and discuss the following questions.

Describe the Hardy-Weinberg theorem and discuss how it can be used as a tool to predict whether evolutionary change will occur.

What is the difference between allele frequency and genotype frequency? How do you compute each of them?

Describe in words the method used in Box 6.3 to test whether a population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. What is the expected genotype frequency? What is the observed genotype frequency?

(Don’t worry about Fig. 6.12 and corresponding text for now – we’ll get to drift next.)

Summarize to the best of your ability the procedure for calculating changes in allele frequencies under selection described in Box 6.5. We will be working on this much more in class, so don’t worry if you don’t fully understand, but you will get it much better in class if you have taken a crack at explaining it on your own first.
