Prepare a set of background notes for teaching
Prepare a set of background notes for teaching (1,500-2,000 words)
• You will be assigned to work on an item or set of items from the contents covered in this course: phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics and genre.
• Prepare a set of background notes for teaching the item(s) (no more than 2,000 words).
• Use a combination of teaching and linguistic textbooks to prepare a detailed set of background notes that could be used by any teacher wanting to teach the item(s) to a group of students. The notes should be clearly set out and easy to follow. The notes should:
o Explain the phonetic/morphological/lexical/syntactic rules (as relevant) that govern the item(s).
o Provide some examples of the item(s) in use.
o Predict the difficulties that students from three
different language backgrounds might have with the item(s) and how teachers could address these difficulties.
• Make use of colour, bullet points, text boxes, tables etc and write in clear, simple language.
• Provide a set of references to support your notes.
APA 6th Reference style.
Part 2: Design a set of teaching and learning activities (1,500-2,000 words)
Design a set of 4 teaching and
learning activities based on an aspect of the grammar item(s) you were allocated above. The activities should: (i) present the grammatical item(s) in a communicative context, (ii) scaffold the language to be taught and (iii) attend to meaning and appropriateness as well as accuracy. The activities are included in the word count. Additional handouts and visuals etc are not included in the word count.
The activites should be:
• clearly staged and sequenced.
• task-based, at least in the
independent use stage.
• aimed at one of three broad levels (elementary, intermediate, advanced).
• presented in a natural, communicative context (grammar question and answer exercises will receive a fail).
• integrated (i.e. involve more than one of the four language skills).
