Progress Report for Analytical Report

Overview
There are two basic types of progress reports: 1) You tell your readers about your progress on one project (i.e. what have you accomplished on the Analytical Report and what do you have left to accomplish before the project is complete). 2) You describe your work on all your projects (i.e. what have you accomplished in your coursework this semester and what do you have left to complete before the winter break).

Progress Reports may differ in many ways: They may cover one project or many; they may be addressed to people inside the writer’s organization or outside it; and they may be used by people who have a variety of reasons for reading them. However, no matter what the situation, a Progress Report (like all other technical documents) is meant to be used by the audience.

Despite their diversity, however, the audiences for progress reports are primarily concerned with the future. That is, even though most progress reports talk primarily about what has happened in the past, their readers usually want that information so that they can plan for the future.

Guidelines
Create a progress report that addresses the work you’ve accomplished thus far on your Analytical Report and what you have left to do in order to complete the project.

It should adhere to the following outline:
1. Introduction
o    What are you researching?
o    What are you trying to accomplish with the research?
o    Approximately how much of your overall project is complete?

2. Completed Work
o    What have you completed thus far?
o    What research you’ve found and/or conducted?
o    What visuals you’ve created?
o    What writing you’ve completed (even if it’s just an outline or drafting)?

3. Future Work
o    What do you have left to accomplish?
o    What due dates have you set for completing the remaining aspects of your project (i.e. final research, drafting, revising, finalizing writing, completing visuals, etc.)
o    What are you going to do to make sure you complete the project on time?

4. Conclusions
o    How do you feel things stand overall?
o    What do you expect from the finished project?

Requirements & Evaluating Criteria
•    No specific word count, but I expect this to mimic real-world progress reports (see pgs 614-615 for examples)
•    Include your name, date, and course in the top left corner of the document
•    Include an appropriate title
•    This is a Homework assignment and not one of your major papers. By the end of the module, you need to submit your final homework assignment to the assignment dropbox. This is a Progress assignment, so it should be titled LastnameProgress.doc

o    How much you have/haven’t accomplished won’t be a factor when evaluating this homework, so be honest with yourself and me. I want this assignment to not only give you practice with progress reports, but also to help you organize and complete your research/writing endeavors on the Analytical Report.

o    I will pay particular attention to how you format this document in order to make it more accessible to your audience. A reader should be able to read a progress report quickly and gain all the relevant information easily.

o    You may include visuals in the progress report if you deem them useful/necessary for your audience.
