“Jeff O’Leary remembers when he decided to become a firefighter. He was seven the night the
smoke alarm woke his family from a deep sleep. He was very scared while his parents hurried everybody outside and woke the neighbors so that they could phone to call 9-1-1. The fire captain said that the
smoke alarm saved them that night, but Jeff thought the firefighters were the real heroes.
Before starting the rookie academy, Jeff had no idea that there were so many kinds of detection, alarm, and suppression systems. He’s fascinated at how the systems and the fire service work together to protect people—including firefighters—and property. Now when he goes into a building,
Jeff usually looks up to check for detectors and sprinklers.”
