Quiz/essay

Answer all three of the following:

1. Identify a set of rivals in China, Japan, and Korea post-1644 – your final total should be least three sets (one from each country) including six people (or more if you identify a triangular rivalry). In a short paragraph, describe the nature of their conflict, the time period it took place in, where it took place, and describe the impact of their rivalry on the modern world (or modern East Asia depending on the scale of the rivalry). The rivalry can be of a military, philosophical, political, diplomatic, or cultural nature.

For example:
Napoleon Bonaparte and Arthur Wellesley Lord Wellington were opposing military leaders during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815). While Napoleon was the emperor of France and chose to led his forces in the field of battle, Wellington was a general in charge of English armies who reported to the Parliament and Prime Minister of England in London. Wellington’s defeat of Napoleon in the battle of Waterloo ended Napoleon’s empire once and for all and set the stage for British global imperialism and the rise of a German state in continental Europe.

Your final answer should look like the following:
China: Rival A and Rival B – Expository paragraph…
Japan: Rival C and Rival D – Expository paragraph….
Korea: Rival E and Rival F – Expository paragraph…

2. Identify one person or group that attempted to usurp the legitimate government of China, Japan, and Korea – your final total should be in three parts and should address each of the three countries. In a short paragraph, describe who the group or individual was, the time period the uprising took place in, where it took place, and describe the impact of this rebellion on the modern world (or modern East Asia depending on the scale of the rivalry).

For example:
The Confederate States of America was created out of the states that had seceded from the United States in response to the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and fears of the abolition of slavery. The Confederacy, as it was referred to, consisted of the southern states of the modern day United States as far west as Texas, south to Florida and north to Virginia. The United States of America defeated the Confederacy in 1865 after a long and bloody war. Although the defeat of the Confederacy led to the end of slavery and the reunification of the country, the nature of the reintegration of the secessionist element left lingering social and economic issues that still impact the United States today.

Your final answer should look like the following:
China: Usurper A – Expository paragraph…
Japan: Usurper B – Expository paragraph….
Korea: Usurper C – Expository paragraph…

3. Identify one major regional area in each China, Japan and Korea (for a total of three parts) that holds some significance for modern East Asia. In a short paragraph, describe what the region is, where it is generally located, who lived there, and an event that took place there that impacts the modern world (or modern East Asia depending on the scale of the rivalry).

For example:
The Appalachian Mountain range is located on the east Coast of the United States of America. It extends as far north as Pennsylvania, south to Georgia and as far west as Kentucky. The Appalachians were the first major obstacle to western expansion during the initial colonization of North America and later became a de factor barrier separating the European settlers and the native Americans of the Midwest. The breaching of this mountain range was not only an issue between Europeans and native Americans in the 1700s, but was also a contributing factor in the American Revolution in the 1770-80s.

Your final answer should look like the following:
China: Region/Terrain Feature A – Expository paragraph…
Japan: Region/Terrain Feature B – Expository paragraph….
Korea: Region/Terrain Feature C – Expository paragraph…
