For this assignment students are required to interview someone representing a social minority. As discussed in your text, minorities are groups of people that have less power than the dominant group. Minorities are usually poorer than the dominant group, have less social prestige, are underrepresented, and are often the target of prejudice and discrimination. Minority status may be dependent on sex, age, race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, handicap, or sexual orientation. Your first step should be to find a willing participant. The interviewee should meet one of the criteria mentioned above. I suggest interviewing someone of adult age, someone that has experienced prejudice or discrimination, and someone that can express the deeper intimacies of social vulnerabilities. Once you’ve found your subject (interviewee), find a nice, quiet place to conduct the interview. Be sure to be both academic and sensitive. The interview, at a minimum, must cover the following areas: Race/Ethnicity Age Discussion of how their minority affects their lives – “What does it mean to you to be considered a minority in our culture?” An example and explanation of prejudice or discrimination that they’ve experienced – ” Can you recall any experiences in which you were discriminated against because of your minority status?” Specifically discuss with them any thoughts regarding prejudice or discrimination in health care. – ” Have you ever experienced any form of prejudice or discrimination in accessing or receiving health care?” The questions above are only examples of what, and how, you might ask questions. A good interviewer will tease out information from the subject and follow up on important or meaningful comments. Transcripts of your interview are not required; however, when reporting your interview, make sure that we have a clear, thorough understanding of the subject’s thoughts and reflections. Because this might take some time, I’ve extended the due date for this assignment to correlate with our discussion on health care.
