Paper instructions:
Drawing on relevant readings and discussions from the course, discuss the representation(s) of masculinity in the film. Situate the film in its socio-historical context: focus, in particular, on the relationships between Mexican nationalism and the masculinities embodied by Tenoch and Julio. How are both masculinity and nationalism homosocial projects, and what roles do they assign to men, women, and queers? Additionally, how are both masculinity and nationalism embedded in heteronormative constructions of time that depend on reproductive futurism?
Does the film suggest any alternative ways of thinking about – and experiencing – nationalism, gender, and time?
