Reading Response (NSR) Guidelines

Whenever there is a reading due, you are expected to complete a reading response using the following guidelines.  This will be due at the start of every class that a reading was due.  On the day a reading is due, students will be chosen randomly to present their response to the class.

Basic Formatting:
•    Typed, double spaced, 12 point font, with 1” margins
•    1-2 pages (250-500 words)
•    Separate headings to differentiate parts 1-3
•    Should follow grammatical conventions in Part Two and Three
•    Heading should include:
•    Your name
•    Your class
•    Due Date
•    The reading assignment (ex. EN 200 Chapter 1)
Guidelines:
Part One: Notes
This should be a “notes” section where you outline some of the key ideas presented in the chapter using whatever method you prefer.  This should include key words, major ideas, strategies, strong quotes, and other important points from the reading.  This part does not need to use complete sentences.

Part Two: Summary
Here, you will write a summary of the chapter.  This is different than the notes as you will summarize the main points in complete sentences using your own words.  This section should not include any quotes from the reading.

Part Three: Response
The third and final part asks you to respond to the reading.  You can use the following questions to get your response started, but you need not answer all questions in every response.
-What did you find to be the most useful section in this reading?
-How will you apply this information to what you are currently working on in this class/other classes?
-What surprised you in this reading?
-What was not helpful in this reading?
-What parts of this reading confused you?
-What questions do you still have that were not answered?

A template sheet has been provided on Blackboard.  You can feel free to utilize that sheet, or you may type it on your own, so long as you follow the guidelines stated above.
