Acoustics of Performance spaces
Columbia College Chicago
Part B
Due: April 22, 2015
2) You have successfully landed a bid for the acoustical design of a small concert hall. The
hall is to be used for orchestral and chorus music only, and it will not contain a sound
reinforcement system. The audience seating area should accommodate 1150 to 1250
people on one floor. The orchestra platform should accommodate an 80 piece
orchestra. Design the space following the acoustical design procedure detailed in
Section 12.8 of the Mehta et al. text.
a. Provide full documentation for your design process.
b. Submit dimensioned schematic plan, transverse cross-section, and longitudinal
cross-section views of your design (submit hardcopies of your AutoCAD
drawings).
c. Select materials for all of the surfaces in the hall. Note your material selections
on your drawings.
d. Calculate the reverberation time for the space using an Excel spreadsheet.
Submit a hardcopy of the spreadsheet indicating the reverberation times you
calculated in each octave band from 125 Hz to 4 kHz.
e. Calculate the initial time delay gap (ITDG) for a seat near the (i) front, (ii) center,
and (iii) back of the seating area in your hall.
f. Calculate the bass ratio (BR) and loudness (G) for your hall.
g. Write a letter to the building owner summarizing your concert hall design.
Discuss how the various design elements (e.g. volume, room shape, materials)
you selected will impact the acoustics of the hall. Describe how you expect the
hall to perform acoustically based on your calculations of reverberation time,
loudness, initial time delay gap, and bass ratio. Be sure to provide general
explanations for these terms in your letter, as the owner may not be familiar with
their meaning.
