This chapter discusses issues in multicultural and multilingual education. As dis-
cussed in Chapter 6, there is currently a global migration of peoples, which has
raised issues in national school systems regarding multicultural and multilingual
student populations. Most nations of the world face the issue of multicultural edu-
cation because of the global movement of populations caused by the growth of an
international labor market, multinational corporations, the search for better eco-
nomic and political conditions, and displacement by war. As the host country of the
largest number of global migrants, Americans have engaged in a broad spectrum
of debates about what should be the type of multicultural and multilingual educa-
tion in schools.

The issue of basic cultural differences in worldviews is part of the discus-
sion of multicultural and multilingual education. Also, some of multicultural
proposals embrace issues of racism and sexism. In this context the following
issues are discussed:

CULTURAL DIFFERENCES IN KNOWING
AND SEEING THE WORLD
A fundamental aspect of multicultural education is that different students have
different ways of knowing and seeing the world. The pioneer work in this field
is Richard E. Nisbett’s The Geography of Thought: How Asians and Westerners
Think Differently . . . and Why. Working with social psychologists from Japan and
China, Nisbett concluded that Japanese and Chinese students have a holistic
worldview while US. students tend to see the world as made up of discrete
