Relationship between the mind and the brain
Project description
The question of the relationship between the mind and the brain is one of the fundamental questions we must ask as we seek to understand our selves, our thoughts, and
our actions. Jackson and Nagel seem to resist identifying what we call ‘mental events’ with brain events, for different reasons, while J.J.C. Smart takes the opposing
view. Describe some of their reasons and imagined scenarios. What are these scenarios meant to show? Do you think they are possible? What, in your view, is the
relationship between the mind and the brain? Explain why you take that position and outline some of its consequences.
You should be able to state the topic, state your view on the topic, outline the philosophers’ arguments on the topic, raise objections to these arguments, and try to
defend the philosopher against these objections. Always make sure that you address the essay questions and that you defend your position with reasons and examples that
may serve as evidence.
