Guidelines
Introduction:  provides general background and a clear, focused thesis statement. The thesis is located after the hook.

Critical Conversation: addresses audience needs and provides necessary information and focus to prepare for your argument.  You should address any pertinent “they say” items here, and state how your particular argument fits within what other people are contributing.

In this particular section of 102, part of the critical conversation will be addressing how your topic is portrayed or addressed in one episode (or more) of a sitcom.  The sitcom should be treated as one of your sources and can be incorporated in the same way as an article or book.

Argument structure:  you should have an awareness of academic language and proper argument structure.  You should be using clear, formal language and structure to communicate a strong argument clearly with support that is explained, grounded in evidence, and interpreted for the audience’s benefit.  The paper should be relatively free of mechanical or grammatical errors.

Quotations and Research:  you demonstrate an intelligent use of direct evidence to support your arguments and effectively mix in paraphrasing, summary, and direct quotation.  This includes properly citing your sources in-text and in a Works Cited page.

So What: your argument should address a topic worth discussing.  You should specify why your topic matters, why the reader should care, or “so what?” in the introduction near your thesis statement, throughout your supporting paragraphs, and/or in the conclusion.
