TOPIC:
Poetics of Violence: Particularly in the first half of this class we have read poems which explore or work to represent violence—the violence of a particular act, or what might generally termed a culture of violence. In some poems, it may seem that content alone engages violence; in others, formal qualities work more overtly with thematic concerns to provide a textual rendering of violent acts or attitudes.
Choosing 4-6 poems which you think are poems which thematically and formally work to represent or convey a “truth” of violence, develop an argument which analyzes the quality and purpose of such an endeavour.
THESIS: the different effects created by either more conventional or more experimental poetic techniques and how these are significant;
Or
the difference and significance (if any) between how women and men write about violence (but do not resort to biographical analysis—focus on the poems themselves, their themes and formal qualities)
