P49210 – Advanced Research Design – Assessment
The summative assessment requires you to compile a research proposal, either for a literature review, an audit or for a piece of primary data collection using a recognised framework. This will often form the basis for your dissertation or project in order to complete your award.
It is important that you make your proposal clear and concise so the reader knows exactly what it is you are proposing to research. It should be well organised and follow a logical sequence. You also need to ensure you support and justify what you discuss by appropriate literature. The proposal must be centred around a topic or research question that is pertinent to your area of health—arid—s-OtTa care practice an programme of study. One suggested framework that you may wish to use for your proposal is that used by Punch (2006) as follows. Some questions to help make your proposal clear are also included
• Title — this is the specific area that you will be exploring and introduces the question. • Question – Do you have a proper research question, rather than just an area for exploration? Is the question clear, concise and explanatory? Is the question realistic and valid? That is to say, is it one that is a genuine gap in understanding this area or is it simply something that you wish to understand for yourself? Your research question may be self-generated from an area of your own interest or it may be a topic suggested by others, perhaps work colleagues. • Aims — What is your research proposal actually about? What do you aim to achieve it? What is the purpose of the proposal? These should be specific to the research question. • Introduction — Why is your proposed research worth doing? What significance does it have and how will it contribute to the evidence/knowledge that already e)iMalciu-t—ihe subject? This should provide an introduction and background to the question. • Current literature review — What is the key literature relating to the subject? How does this support and justify your research question and research design? • Methodology — How are you going to go about answering your research question? Why is this methods appropriate for your research question? • Methods — What exactly will you do to answer the question? Have you provided an overview of how you will collect the data? • Sample — What literature are you likely to use? What databases will you use and why? • Access to data/sample — How will you search out and select appropriate literature? What terms will you use (use Boolean indicators)? What are your inclusion and exclusion criteria? • Data collection — How will you judge that you have collected sufficient literature? • Data analysis — Will you use any tools/frameworks to help with your analysis of the literature? If so, which one(s) and why will you use them? How will you go about managing and organising the literature you have collected? • Ethical issues — Why is this important? Do the studies state ethical approval was granted? What issues may you have as a researcher when analysing the literature? • Rigour- How well have the studies you are reviewing been carried out? • Limitations — What influenced what you propose to do and why? (Lack of access to appropriate literature, perhaps your inexperience with research and literature reviews). Do you have the skills, resources and support to do the study? • Timeframe — This is a project management plan. Have you included a table detailing how you will carry out your proposed research over the coming months? Is the project realistic within the timeframe of a dissertation? • Dissemination — How will you communicate your findings to others? (Publishing in journals, conference presentations, presenting to colleagues). • References — Have you referenced what you have discussed in relation to the research design and the proposed question? Have you used the Harvard Referencing system? • Appendices — These can include the tools you have used — for example, if you plan to use any tools to help with your analysis of the literature (for example, CASP).
