Rhetorical Analysis

Rhetorical Analysis

A rhetorical analysis calls upon you to closely examine a text. In this case you will be analyzing the film Crash. You will be asserting your opinions about the film, but will not us “I” in the paper. You will need to develop an opinion about a theme, character, topic, or any other element of the film to create a thesis statement. Explain how elements of the film work together to support your assertion/opinion stated in your thesis. Use logical examples and reasoning to support your opinions. As opinions are not facts, it is not necessary to use “I think” or I feel” in front of assertive statements. It is however, vital that you support your opinions and assertions in an organized, logical, manner. Always use the 5W How for an excellent analysis!

Do not try to analyze the entire film. Choose one or two topics and analyze them thoroughly. Some issues you may want to analyze:

• What is the purpose of this film for the audience? Is it different from the purpose of the creators/producers/actors?
• What is the intended audience?
• What use of language or emotional appeal is present? What is the purpose? How does the film use logos, pathos ethos? Is it effective?
• What are the goals of this film? Are they achieved?
• Is there any character/event/scene that challenges the audience?
• What is this film saying about class/race/gender relations?
• Is there a “silenced” voice ?
• How are discourse communities portrayed? Why?
