Rhetorical Analysis

Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

The Prompt:

You must find three outside sources to support your opinion (primary text not included).

Rhetorical Analysis Prompt Winter 2015

We’ve had discussions about the Rhetorical Situation (triangle) and you’ve read information that suggests that each point of the triangle (including the context that surrounds the triangle) influences each other. For example, the audience’s raised expectations of a genre seemingly forces/encourages rhetors to either challenge those expectations or meet and/or go beyond those expectations in an attempt to connect to his/her audience.

We’ve also discussed how context (social/cultural/historical context) may influence the choices that rhetors make, effects the mindset of the audience and determine the form of a piece of communication.

In light of the above, it makes sense that we should be able to have a conversation about contextual issues that may find their way into text (i.e. the messages that a rhetor might be attempting to present to the audience).

The Prompt:

What message(s) do you think Marion Isaac is presenting for his audience’s consideration? Form an opinion, about that message and develop an argument that attempts to persuade an audience towards your opinion. You must find three outside sources to support your opinion (primary text not included).

Considering parts of the Rhetorical Situation may help you formalize some ideas on how to respond to the prompt.

ROUGH DRAFT THOUGHTS

Ways to approach thinking about your topic. Look at each part of WB’s rhetorical situation. The ideas below may be hard to find support for.

Rhetor

I believe that Marion is a racist and that he is advancing a racist message that suggests that one group of beings are superior to others. He seemingly makes a racist appeal by the tone and language of his novel. By making the Boneys one dimensional, he is presenting an unrealistic view of what it means to be alive. Although the Boneys do not appear to look and function as we do, they do form a community that has 1) religion 2) adoption services 3) an institution of marriage……etc (Again, this idea is way out there. I would have to work hard to find support for it)

Audience

I believe that Marion’s characterization of how children should be trained (the living and the dead) trivializes the need for hands on learning experiences within our school system. WB seemingly makes a mockery of our education system and in doing so, he lowers the public perception of public education. Hands on learning education was first developed during the 19xx….etc (Education Journal pg 14). For example…..

Text….the book itself.

I believe that WB makes a strong case against organized religion.
