SAMPLE Essay Skeleton

Thesis: Although Deo arrives to America with an advanced education from Burundi, and proficiency in two languages, the lack of access to education, as offered in UDHR Article 26, poses the greatest obstacle for Deo, as can be seen through his struggles to survive without this right and alternately his progress whenever that barrier is lifted.
POINT/Topic Sentence 1:

While it might be argued that Deo has access to free education in the form of books and libraries, this unstructured access is slow and limited by Deo’s interpretation of the texts.

POINT/

Topic Sentence 2:

Without a formal education, Deo’s acquisition of the English language is stilted, and with it, his ability to communicate and make valuable connections is insufficient.
POINT/

Topic Sentence 3:

Education means opportunity, and the lack of education means dependence, which for Deo takes the form of an unrelenting and brutal supervisor, Goss.

POINT/

Topic Sentence 4

Reflecting on his childhood, we can see that the lack of education in Burundi would have meant higher mortality rates and arduous toil with little upward mobility.

POINT/

Topic Sentence 5:

More importantly for Deo, educational access is directly connected to his emotional and psychological well-being; school being synonymous with the pathway to freedom, achievement, and his true identity.

POINT/

Topic Sentence 6:

In both Burundi and America, when the coveted doors of education opened to him, other obstacles diminished and the pathway to success was clearer.
