Educational Counseling – ADHD Case Study

Case Study #1: ADHD
Cara is a 12-year-old girl who recently transferred to your middle school about two months into the school year. Although she seemed a bit unorganized from the beginning, her teachers thought she might need some time to adjust to the new environment. At this point, she is constantly experiencing difficulties in keeping her things organized, often loses her work, or forgets to take books home in order to complete her homework. Her grades have been average, but her teachers mention that she is very bright and capable of getting A’s and B’s. The grades are suffering due to her forgetting to turn in her homework. During locker clean-out, her teacher described Cara’s locker as a complete mess. She has also had some difficulty getting along with her peers and often blurts out answers in class. She seems to make friends easily, but has difficulty maintaining those friendships. Students in her classes have also asked the teacher to sit somewhere else due to Cara’s fidgeting which annoys them.
Upon looking through Cara’s academic records, you notice that she has had difficulty since Kindergarten. The concerns mentioned by her current teachers are similar to those expressed by previous teachers in elementary school and her prior middle school. Her records indicated that she has limited organizational skills, loses work, gets up out of her seat all the time, is impatient in the lunch line and during transition times, and has difficulties getting along with her peers. One comment mentioned that she was “socially immature”. Her parents also confirm that Cara often does not follow through on responsibilities at home and fights with her younger siblings on a daily basis. They did mention that Cara has a creative imagination and she is really good at creative projects, but also daydreams a lot. They are open to any suggestions or assistance to help their daughter, but have not explored any support outside of the school setting.

As a school counselor, you will almost certainly encounter students diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. The case study you will use for this assignment is attached. Prepare a 5-7 page response paper to the Case Study. Use the assigned textbooks as references, along with any journal articles that may be applicable. Your central task in this paper is to:

1. Identify the main behavioral concerns for this student, and how the disorder does manifest (and/or could manifest) at school.

2. Note whether or not you would recommend school counseling services for this client; if so, what services? If not, why?

3. Make recommendations for other school-based interventions.

4. Create recommendations for the parent/guardian of the student.

5. Introduce and respond to any additional questions germane to the case.
