Healthcare Policy

Purpose

To assess your ability to:
• Develop a legislative healthcare policy proposal.
• Defend a current health policy from the perspective of a special interest group.

Overview
In this assignment, you will write a legislative policy, defend it from the perspective of a special interest group, and present it to the class. Your will challenge one of your classmates’ proposed legislative policy and also defend or revise your own policy based on the challenges you receive from your classmates.

Action Items
1. Complete the assigned readings for this week.
2. Use the Internet to identify and research a health services problem or trend that impacts a specific population.
? Identify the major causes contributing to the problem including historical, cultural, demographic, and/or geographical factors.
3. Based on your research, compose a legislative policy proposal of at least 500 words that includes the following elements:

? A brief statement of the problem or trend
? Evidence that the problem or trend needs to be dealt with on the policy level
? A brief statement of the proposal
? Discussion of the details of the proposal
? Summary
4. By Wednesday, post your initial response on the discussion topic, Proposing Policy. Go to the Toolbox and click Discuss to display the discussion tool and make a post.

5. Your policy must comply with APA guidelines, except that you are to keep it single-spaced and no cover page is necessary. Make sure to include a reference list and in-text citations.
6. By Friday, identify one of your classmates’ policy proposal posts to challenge. Your challenge should be at least 200 words. Suggested challenge strategies include but are not limited to:
? Identify limitations of the proposed legislation policy.
? Identify the impact of the proposed legislation policy on different interest groups.

? Identify the potential disadvantages to special interest groups.
? Identify groups that the proposed legislation policy might exclude.
7. By Sunday, review all the challenges to your post by your classmates and defend your proposed policy by posting a comprehensive reply to your peers’ challenges or use to the challenges to revise your proposed policy. You reply must be at least 200 words.
