Sex Trafficking, Healthcare and Diaspora

The definition of human trafficking, or trafficking in person, has been redeveloped over the last several decades in order to create an all inclusive definition, that can be applied to multinational, multilingual, and multicultural environments with purpose of: identifying the victims, eliminating the demand, fighting the suppliers and protecting the vulnerable population. The Palermo Protocol of 2001 states, that human trafficking implies the action of recruitment of individual by means of threat or use of force for the purpose of exploitation. This paper will incorporate on ideas proposed by Jonathan Todres about methodological possibilities of healthcare approach in relation to human trafficking, sex trafficking and smuggling; and introduce new methodological approach of incorporating the knowledge of healthcare as a primary source of data collection towards illegal sex industries with an emphasis on diasporic communities in the host counties. The aim of the paper is to look at how policy makers can use private medical practice model in the United States and government regulated healthcare in the Nordic Countries in order to identify the vulnerable diasporic communities that are working in illegal sex industries by using ILO (International Labour Office) operational indicators. The correlation between private healthcare practice and government regulated healthcare practice in regard to illegal sex industries will be discussed in the paper to identify which model of healthcare is the best approach of looking at illegal sex industries.
