Sex,violence and transgression

Sex,violence and transgression

Order Description

Important: please see the additional file I upload, it includes the requirement of this assessment. You can search some videos related to state violence on Youtube. Please tell me the youtube video you used.
Here is some additional information. To bring a media resource(s) that centers on representations of violence and/or transgression*. Think about and answer the following questions before class: Why did you choose this example? How is the case being reported? Are there victims/perpetrators involved? If so what role does guilt, blame or victimhood play in this story? Where is the story published, who created/edited it, and how does that influence how it is being reported and/or framed (e.g. what ‘expert’ or other discourses circulate in this example)? What are some of the theories from the course you could apply to an analysis of this example?Actually I found this article this morning as I was reading my daily online news: http://www.dailylife.com.au/life-and-love/love,-sex-and-relationships/the-problem-with-banning-female-ejeculation-in-porn-20141204-120edx.html
As you’ll see it doesn’t fit completely into the idea of ‘violence’ as a crime e.g. with a perpetrator/victim and so on, but it’s certainly relevant to the discussion of perceived violence when it comes to porn/BDSM, and what kind of content comes under the scrutiny of censors for its apparent transgression of pornographic and/or social norms. I’d like to flag that this kind of example could also form part of your first assignment, so that *I have amended both the media log and assignment wording to “a media resource that centers on representations of violence and/or transgression’ (Importantly, however, if you choose ‘transgression’, remember that this must relate to violence in some broader capacity. So, if you were doing queerphobic violence, perhaps ‘queerness’ as transgression of gendered/sexual norms that seems to invite violence, OR if doing BDSM/sex wars, how feminist discussions of BDSM might conflate consensual pain/pleasure and violence against women, or the idea that censorship of transgressive material is a moral good that prevents real-life ‘violence’)

GCST2604 Sex, Violence and Transgression (Summer 14/15)
Case Study Assignment
Length: 2000 words (worth 30% overall mark)
Due: by 11:59pm Friday December 12th

All assignments to be submitted through Turnitin (via eLearning website)

Task:

Select an example/s  of a representation of violence and/or transgression* from the news media (e.g. current affairs programs, newspapers etc. ) or film/television. Your example should relate to one of the topics covered in the first half of the course, e.g. queerphobic violence, pornography and the sex wars (including BDSM) and rape and consent.

Analyse your example using at least TWO of the central concepts that we have examined in the course to date. Examples include: power/knowledge, discipline, docile bodies, discourse, heteronormativity, technologies of the body, safety maps, visibility, consent, etc. (consult your tutor if you are unsure about your chosen concepts).

Aim to demonstrate an understanding of how violence is represented in a way that is never ‘neutral’, that is, is inflected by various discourses, the source, location and time of its production, and the political and social context in which it is situated. Think about how these factors shape our understanding of the ‘subjects’ and ‘subject positions’ (e.g. un/deserving victim, monstrous/hapless perpetrator etc.) depicted or implied in these events.

*if you choose ‘transgression’, remember that this must relate to violence in some broader capacity
