slavery and the lives of slaves

Paper instructions:
The documents provided are a small sampling of the sorts of sources that historians can use to understand the lives and experiences of slaves themselves. What can you learn from them? What do these documents tell us about the experience of slavery and the lives of slaves? And what difficulties come along with them? What are the limitations of these sources? Ultimately, which do you find the most useful in recovering the experience of slavery?

Your response should reference at least two of the documents–either Equiano or Wheatley’s writings, as well as one of the more indirect sources–and must include specific quotations from them. As you introduce each of your sources, begin by setting it within its context. Who’s writing (if you know)? For whom are they writing? And why? And remember to pay particular attention here to the limitations of each source. Then proceed to answer the questions that I’ve posed. Your response (of 400-500 words) will be graded on the extent of your engagement with these documents and your efforts to evaluate them historically.
