Sleep Dealer
Alex Rivera’s film Sleep Dealer as a critical dystopia that extrapolates from elements of the present in order to
imagine a different future. Write a paper making an argument about the three most
significant elements of the present that Rivera responds to in Sleep Dealer. Find
2-4 outside sources to draw on to explain the issues of the present that you are
focusing on and connect them to a close reading of scenes from Rivera’s film. In
analyzing film, it is necessary to pay attention to the dialogue (what we hear
characters say), but also to other elements that we do not always think of: sound
and music, for instance, as well as what the director shows us and thereby makes
visible (setting, props and other objects in the film world, costumes, etc.). Try to
