Small Claims” cases.

This assignment requires a trip to your local courthouse. Since these chapters deal with the courts and court procedure, your assignment is to sit in on several Small Claims cases and write a paper describing the most interesting four contested cases (not a default case). You are expected to spend two hours or more in court. If you sit in small claims I provide extra time to turn in this assignment. You may turn in this assignment anytime before the Unit 5 assignment. Alternative B must be turned in by the due date listed in the Course Schedule.
The judge will usually appreciate it if you tell him why you are there. He may be able to help and explain some of the process. I have e-mailed the District Court Judges in Washington and let them know they may have students from my class in their courtroom. You will need to contact the court in your area and find out when they will be hearing “Small Claims” cases. In the smaller jurisdictions small claims may happen only twice a month.
Your paper should have an introductory paragraph that explains what court you went to, who the judge was and how long you were there.
For each of the four contested cases you write on you should include a narrative description including the following:
1. Facts
2. Issues
3. Law Applied (if the judge provides this information)
4. Decision
You are to have a concluding paragraph describing your impressions of the experience and any concluding thoughts or comments you may have.
