The paper is required to be 2.5 – 3 pages in length.

Paper Instructions

Length: 2.5 – 3 pages

Spacing: 1.5 or 2.0

Margins: 1″ (top, bottom, left, right) Your first page of text should begin at the top of the page with a 1″ margin.

Font: 12 pt. Times New Roman

Title: Your title will have its own page and should include the name of your paper, your name, course/section number, NSHE number and date. The title page will not count towards your page limit.

Content: Pick any topic that is in your textbook or that we covered in this course. Some of these topics include crime, deviance, social control, gender, sexuality, race, social/class stratification, social movements, socialization and family, but you are not limited to what I just listed. You may pick a subtopic from one of the areas we covered to make your paper more specific if you choose to do so. For example, you may discuss drugs, subcultures, transgender issues, ethnic groups, etc. to more precisely fit your intellectual interests. If you’re unsure about the relevance of your topic, email me and we can discuss this matter.

Theoretical Framework: You must discuss your content through lens of conflict theory, functionalism or symbolic interactionism. Pick one theory and demonstrate how your content fits within the realm of the theoretical framework you choose. For example, you can explain how arrest or incarceration rates can be explained by power differentials through a conflict perspective.

Key Concepts: A minimum of three concepts must be introduced in your paper. For example, if discussing culture as your content piece, you may want to include concepts such as culture shock, ethnocentrism, language, norms and values. For every module we covered, Dr. Brents and James Henslin provided several key sociological concepts.

Citations: You must include a minimum of 3 sources in your paper. If you quote something be sure to cite it. You must have a reference page at the end of your paper with the citations you use. Your reference page will not count towards your page limit. Use a citation format that your field of study requires. For instance, if you’re a psychology major, then use APA.
