Essay question:

‘For any two of the thinkers, outline their key ideas and assess their contribution to the sociological understanding of contemporary society’

Thinkers must be Stuart Hall and Paul Gilroy.

1000 words on the first part of the question which is to outline both their key ideas.

1000 words on the second part of the question, which is assessing their contribution to the sociological understanding of contemporary society.

• When talking about both thinkers key ideas, you must be comparing and contrasting them with their similarities. You can talk about the differences between both thinkers but try and concentrate the essay on the similarities.

• What are the connections between both Hall and Gilroy?

• Talk about their contribution to the sociological understanding of contemporary society. Are their key ideas still valid now in 2014? How?

• The essay should develop a logical argument and follows standard referencing conventions.

• MUST outline both thinkers’ key ideas and ensure they link with each other.

• Assess both authors contribution to the sociological understanding of contemporary society and again, link their ideas! THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO DO SO.

• Make sure the information is correct and uses THE CORRECT REFERENCES to back up the statements.

• The reader needs to believe that I have read and now understand both authors well in order for me to compare and contrast them.

• Please make sure the references are relevant to the assertions.

• Need specific assertions in the essay which are informative and do not want any general/vague ones.

• MUST ANSWER BOTH PARTS TO THE QUESTION.

• Please do not go over the word count as my university does not allow this

• I have attached two lectures which may help get started

This point I am now going to make is extremely important to understand, Please please write the assignment in an extremely simple way. I would not like any jargon into my essay as I want to understand it 100% myself before submitting this.

Try and use as many simple words as possible! As if you were writing this essay for a student doing their first year of A level

The meat of the essay should be that Hall and Gilroy understand cultural complexity to that we are all made up of many identities and that diversity is still an issue.

Try and make the references things such as books that Gilroy and Hall have written.

I do not want journal articles referenced. Mainly books but a couple websites are acceptable.

Talk about how both Hall and Gilroy emphasise the importance of History and the importance of globalisation.
