Stating a Position Essay

A pattern to follow:

I. State your thesis directly. This does not need to be especially long, but it should set forth the primary view you have.

II. State the issue as you understand it. Be careful here to avoid the lazy path that says something like, “All who are for gun control just want to stop hunting.” That is not true on many different levels. You need to delve into the issue at length, show the extent of it, frame the discussion of it, and carve away that which does not pertain to the discussion.

III. Offer your position or your stance on the issue, and offer your reasoning for that position. Be clear here. Not everyone understands what you do, and you need to draw a picture clearly for others to follow. Once you do that, you can persuade others along your path, which is the point of persuasion. Be as concrete as possible, and offer examples from the real world whenever they demonstrate just what you mean. The concrete illustrates the abstract.

IV. Advantages–give the real world, concrete advantages your position has over any other position.

V. Disadvantages–show what limitations your view might have and reasons why we should accept those. Really, this is not as difficult as it seems. If the advantages are so great, the disadvantages might be slight or be overcome by the advantages.
