YOUR ASSIGNMENT:
• A 1,000 to 1,500 word, in-depth story with a clearly defined news peg about an aspect of city/local government, a general community issue or an education-related

issue.
• This story must include at least four live sources (interviews). This usually means at least one detailed interview and a minimum of three other supporting

interviews.
• Be sure to include a Query Letter with the (optional draft) and the completed version (required) of this article. This letter should be address to the appropriate

editor of a publication that would likely be receptive to this type of article.
• Reminder #1: The opening of your Query Letter should read much the same as a lead to the story might be written. You are giving the editor and preview of how the

article might read, then explaining what facts and sources will be used to complete the story.
• Reminder #2: You lose points for errors of AP Style, grammar and spelling.
YOUR QUERY:
• Find a publication (magazine or online) that would likely run the type of article you are writing.
• Be sure to note of the accurate mailing address, the appropriate editor and any other details unique to this publication.
• Attach a signed query letter, addressed to this publication to both the draft and fmal versions of your article.
