When an almost bankrupt security company was offered to her, Datuk Dr.
Maznah Hamid and her husband, who were eager to change their ordinary life,
took the plunge and sacrificed RM5,000 of their saving. Only then she realised
that apart from managing the operation, she also had to be a manager, a clerk,
an accountant and a receptionist. To grow their business, they had to sell their
house and moved to a slum. But her perseverance paid off; it’s difficult to find
someone who has never heard of Securiforce in Malaysia. This case is based on
excerpts from an interview of Datuk Dr Maznah Hamid.

What accounts for your success in this area? I have always been curious and I
have always been an achiever. I am very tenacious, as well; I don’t give up on
things. Furthermore, it is my nature to be adventures. I am very willing to go out
and try new ventures.

What insights in the process of buying a firm can you offer? If I had to stress one
central theme, it would be this: an entrepreneur has to persevere. This involves

What it is that motivates you to devote your time and resources to the development of women, particularly those with an interest in business? My father
died when I was very little, and I was raised by my grandmother and my mother.
These extraordinary women believed in responsibility and that a person could do
anything they set their mind to do. They instilled these beliefs in me. They
emphasised that a woman didn’t need anyone to create a fulfilling life for herself.
That message has always empowered me. Being raised by these strong women,
I have always felt a responsibility to pass that on to other women; I have made it
a personal mission. Additionally, women often aren’t good at helping one another.
Men seem to have a better concept of networking and I think a lot of this is owed
to men’s participation in team sports. It is also interesting that men can argue and
disagree and still turn to each other for help and support as if nothing happened.
Women, on the other hand, typically will not only refrain from asking for
assistance, they won’t talk to that person in the future. Sadly, this sort of
behaviour prevents women from achieving the same kind of camaraderie in
advancing in business world. I hope my participation helps to overcome this
mentality and helps women appreciate the value of supporting each other.

In light of this, do you think it is important for women in business to find effective
mentors? Yes, but I think you can be your own mentor. This can be achieved
through believing in one’s self, the attitude that anything is possible and
abandoning fears. An individual that believes she can pick herself up and go
forward, even in the face of adversity, is positioned for success. In my opinion,
‘failure’ is not a bad word and it is not a stop sign; rather, it is a detour.

You are also passionate about women’s financial freedom. What is the most
important piece of financial advice you like to share with women? It is very simple.
Women have to earn their own incomes, manage that money, and put it away for
an emergency, because that emergency always comes. Women often abdicate
that basic principle when they enter marriage because they don’t put any value
on their contributions to the partnership. As such they entrust their survival to
someone else. As women, we are not brought up to think that we deserve money
and success especially in our Asian culture. Instead, we are raised to believe
that someone’s going to take care of us. That might sound comforting, but
statistically that doesn’t happen in our present era. Many women live at poverty
line after marital splits. Why is that? Because they relied on someone to take
care of them and were set adrift when the situation changed. Ultimately, whose
fault it that? It cannot be blamed it on someone else. We are all responsible for
our own wellbeing
