Supply Chain Modelling

Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

You are required to research and develop your own case study material for this
assignment. The case study can be a company based case study, or can be adopted
and adapted from literature (Logistics, Supply Chain and Operational Research
Journals), or can include examples from your past experience. Where a full case
study or parts of the case study are being compiled from published, secondary
material you are required to reference this appropriately
Steps to follow:
A. Determine a theoretical framework on which you are going to base your case
study. Describe the case study as part of a supply chain system. Evaluate the
supply chain case study and determine the critical issues within this case
study (for example high inventory level, low customer service level, high
transport cost, unreliable forecast, discrepancy between sales forecast and
real sales, inappropriate use of performance measures, and so on).
(30 marks)
B. A minimum of two operational techniques must be identified and detailed at
this point (use a selection from the following: simulation models with ARENA,
forecasting models, transportation models, assignment models,
transshipment models, distribution planning, network flow models and vehicle
scheduling models). Only techniques studied in the module BHT4009 are
accepted.
Describe the theoretical aspects related to your selected operational
techniques in the context of your case study. Determine which performance
measures you are going to work with. Indicate the performance measures you
are going to analyse in the context of your supply chain case study. Define
the model and provide a numerical solution which would indicate an
improvement on your performance measures.
(40 marks)
C. Critically analyse and validate your proposed model/models and results.
Present your conclusions and give recommendations for the future.
(30 arks)D. Reflecting on your experience of doing this assignment, provide a selfevaluation
on how preparing for this assignment helped you in your
understanding of the supply chain modelling techniques. Please note: the
answer to this question is a personal one so this part will not be assessed.
However, it will be taken to form part of the overall evaluation intended to
ascertain your understanding of the contributions of supply chain modelling.
This evaluation may be considered for the overall module evaluation and
research. There will be no reference to your name if any information provided
within this report is used in research.Tips on data collection:
The data used can be selected from past experience (for example previous jobs), or
secondary data can be used (from published reports, journal papers or books).
A selection of case studies can be adopted from published material which link in a
logical way to form a supply chain system. Please ensure that this is clearly
explained within the report and appropriately referenced.
Marking structure:
30 marks are allocated for part A.
• Determine an original case study which will support a selection of operation
techniques.
• Aim to synthesise logistical concepts and interrelate operational techniques
and theories.
• Use appropriate references where necessary.
• Good understanding of the operational techniques studied and their
application within a logistics environment is expected here.
40 marks are allocated for part B.
• Show good theoretical understanding of the modelling techniques.
• Critically discuss the mathematical model and its corresponding solution in
each case.
• Evaluate the model limitations
• Link the model with appropriate performance measures
30 marks are allocated for part C.
• Critical analysis of the models used in relation to the selected case study.
• The ability to test and validate the models forms the basis for this answer.
• The ability to interrelate logistics theory studied on this course (not only this
module) will help you to achieve a high score for this part.
• Use appropriate references where necessary
A word processed report of 3000 words should be provided. All numerical and
graphical analyses should be included in this document and submitted via Unilearn,
Turnitin. The files with the models solved (e.g. in ARENA, Excel, Minitab,
ForecastPro, Paragon and so on) have to be submitted in Unilearn following the
indicated link: Assignments/Summative Assessment/The models file.

Supply Chain Modelling BHT 4009 Summative Assessment This assignment represents 50% for this module. The work should be submitted on or before 8 February 2015 by 23:59. A word processed report of 3000 words should be provided. All numerical and graphical analyses should be included in this document and submitted via Unilearn, Turnitin. The files with the models solved (e.g. in ARENA, Excel, Minitab, ForecastPro, Paragon and so on) have to be submitted in Unilearn following the indicated link: Assignments/Summative Assessment/The models file. You will receive feedback to this assignment by week commencing 1 March 2015. The tutor reassessment work is due on 16 March 2015. Standard assessment criteria apply. The front page of your report should consider the followings: student name and number; module code; assignment name; tutor name; total word count for the main text (this excludes the word count for the figures, tables, front page, references, table of contents and appendices). Incorporate a table of contents after the front page. At the end of your report, incorporate a list of references, appendices and the selfevaluation report.
