syntax and phonology
Analyze syntax and phonology in a poem or
literary passage of your choice. Establish a foundation in linguistics by citing at least one source that you find using a search of journal articles through the UofM library.
Some of the poems used in the discussion of phonetics and phonology could serve as a starting
point for your analysis in paper 2. Adding analysis of syntax will show how the two work together to
create the desired effect of your selection.
Poe offered ideas along these lines in his ?Philosophy of
Composition? (https://www.eapoe.org/works/essays/philcmpb.htm). Alternatively, you may want to use some of the resources on recursion as the theoretical basis for your analysis.
I?ve asked that you find at least one
suitable journal article among your sources in order to establish your theoretical framework within linguistics. As an example, I was able to find many interesting articles by doing the following:
(1) https://www.memphis.edu/libraries/
(2) Select Databases
(3) Type in JSTOR
(4) Connect to JSTOR
(5) Authenticate with username and password
(6) In the search box, type (for example) syntax phonology literary linguistics
(7) Click SEARCH
(8) Click on PDF of desired articles for full text.
Among the sources accessed this way is an
interesting-looking article on sound symbolism (Nuckolls 1999, item 13 on my list). Using this article as a foundation, you could explore the sound symbolism within a
suitable literary selection.
