General Guidelines
Markers will apply penalties for going over word limits. You are therefore highly
advised to stay within the limits. The paper serves the purpose of
an exam for the course, and marking will reflect understanding of the relevant
debates examined in the course.
NOTE:. Any use of material written by others, including material from the Internet, must be
accompanied by a reference to that author.
Specific Guidelines:
The essay will take one of the topics we cover in class as a starting point and
develop an argument with both theoretical and empirical aspects. The essay must
have the following components:
1. An abstract.
2. A clear introduction.
3. A research question derived from the course, such as “why do terrorists
resort to a particular strategy?”, or “which conditions breed terrorism?”.
4. A discussion of the literature relevant to your research question. This
literature review highlights why your research question is important.
5. You will develop a coherent theoretical argument or claim, such as
“religious motivations are necessary for suicide bombing because…”, that
addresses your research question and yields empirically testable
hypotheses.
6. A research design that outlines how the empirical implications could be
tested effectively if you had no temporal or monetary constraints.
7. A brief conclusion.
Percentage behind criteria reflects grading scheme (Note this does not add to 100
percent. Style and presentation will also matter).
1) Essay structure (10%):
a) Abstract (~150 words)
b) Introduction and presentation of research question (~350 words)
c) Literature review (~700 words)
d) Theoretical argument and hypotheses (~1200 words)
e) Empirical research design (~400 words)
f) Conclusion (~200 words)
2) Formulation of research question (10%)
3) Literature (20%): Please correctly cite at least 15 important articles that relate to
your research question (These may include articles discussed in class). How does
your research question address shortcomings in the literature and builds upon
existing work? Internet sources (except downloaded scholarly working papers) do
not count towards the grading criteria.
4) Theoretical argument and hypotheses (45%). Develop a theoretical argument that
allows for the empirical test. The theory should state explicit assumptions (about
actors, their environment, and behavior) and deduct its empirical implications.
5) Empirical research design (10%): Outline an empirical research design that could
effectively test the empirical implications of your theoretical argument if you had no
temporal or monetary constraints.
DO NOT IGNORE THESE GUIDELINES. EVERY YEAR SOME STUDENTS DO,
WITH PREDICTABLE CONSEQUENCES FOR THEIR MARK.
