The Egg and the Sperm

Emily Martin’s article “The Egg and the Sperm” is a highly formalized academic article which appeared in the journal Signs. For this journal entry, I want you to read Martin’s article, but also to think about its context and the “real life” it lives outside of our textbook. Look at the description of Signs and consider what kind of journal it is. Look at the footnotes and the acknowledgements that comes before them. What do you learn about the essay from reading the footnotes and learning about the journal in which Emily Martin published it? What does it add to or take away from the understanding of the article that you get from reading just the main body of it? Your response should be about 250 words.
