This week, you’ve read two famous speeches from two different time periods. The first, Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream” has been studied for years by
students of composition for it’s strong arguments and powerful wording ( I strongly suggest that you listen to the audio while reading the text to get the full power
of Dr. King’s oratory).
The second is a very recent speech by President Obama in Cairo where he talks about a number of issues.
Now, based on a careful analysis of the two speeches, answer the following questions:
1. How do the issues discussed in each speech give us clues about the time period they were made in?
2. Choose 3 quotes that stand out to you in each speech–why do they strike you? What are the authors trying to do in those quotes?
