The student is to prepare a minimum 750 word essay concerning the importance of the Pentateuch in the 21st century. The student should offer a theme from the Pentateuch and by expressing/illustrating from the books of the Pentateuch how the message of the Pentateuch speaks to the student’s theme and offers significant interpretation to our day.
Example: The theme of personal relationships – using Adam and Eve, Abram and Sarah, Sarah and Hagar, Jacob and his relationship to his father, mother, father-in-law and God, Joseph and his brothers, and Moses and the people, illustrate the meaning and importance of relationships. Using the material from the Pentateuch then express how the struggles of these relationships speak to our day.
Example: The theme of call, commitment, and covenant. How did the individuals experience call, commitment, and covenant in the lives of those in the Pentateuch? Using Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah, Abram, Jacob, Joseph, and Moses express how call, commitment, and covenant was depicted and how was it important. Illustrate the role that call, commitment, and covenant express in our world.
Other Examples: The role of death, laws, justice, sexuality, war, forgiveness, etc.
