3)You can create your own thesis and find sources. Basically, you have more choices to write this paper.
WCL2352 World Cinema Final Paper
Due dates:
1. All students are required to turn in a properly-cited list of sources and a working thesis statement for their final papers by November 19th (see syllabus) – hard copy only.
2. Final papers due on December 10th by noon. Papers should be 8-10 pages long (max. 2500 words).
Papers should be submitted via Turn-It-In and as a hard copy (student will lose 2 letter grades, if they do not submit paper to Turn-It-In!) For hard copies: There will be a box labeled “Papers for Kleinheider” in Agnes Arnold Hall 613. Ask the administrative assistant if you need help.
Turning in a rough draft is NOT mandatory, however, the instructor will read and comment on rough drafts she receives up until December 8th at noon – the earlier you give her a rough draft, the more detailed she is able to make her comments! Drafts received last minute (for example, on the weekend before the paper is due) will receive only cursory notes – it will be helpful and may improve your grade in the end, but try to turn in a rough draft earlier. The more time you leave yourself to rewrite, the better. You are receiving information about your paper approximately 7 weeks before it is due. Do NOT wait until final exam week to start.
Topic (students may discuss any course film they have not yet covered in a paper):
Part of this paper assignment includes students choosing their own topic. Approaches you might consider:
Discussing a specific figure and his/her/its role in the film
Discussing a particular aspect of cinematography and its influence in the film
The “message” of the film and how either the plot or cinematography contributes to it
*Important: papers must contain a thesis statement! This means that simply “describing” a character or plot point will not suffice. “In this paper, use the figure of Fausta and her role in the film, Milk of Sorrow” is NOT a thesis statement. A thesis is also NOT an opinion: “In the Milk of Sorrow, Fausta is an interesting character because she is mysterious – hidden, both visually and emotionally, from the audience.” This is a better start, but is, nonetheless an opinion. Your reader does not care whether you find Fausta interesting or not. You need to ARGUE something about the film and Fausta. For example: In the film “The Milk of Sorrow,” objects and filmic techniques often hide the face or body of the main character, Fausta. This technique especially reflects her changing relationship to men throughout the film. Theses should contain a “why,” “how,” and “to what effect.”
References: Students should use up to 2 outside sources for their paper (only one may be an on-line source). The MLA database, available through the library website, is a good resource to find articles.
