The purpose of this assignment is to help you create a research question and hypothesis that you will apply to

the remaining lab assignments and final project. We will provide you with feedback that should help you complete

your final project.

Due Date
Friday, February 21st, 2014

Submission
All assignments should be submitted to the d2l dropbox by 10:00 pm on the due date. We encourage you to submit

early in case problems arise due to your computer, internet access, or the d2l site. If you are unable to submit

due to one of these problems, you MUST email your TA the assignment by 10:00 pm on the due date.

Only one person in each group needs to submit the assignment and the TAs will only grade one assignment per

group. Please be sure to include the names of all group members so that everyone receives credit.

Format
Your assignment should be no more than 1-2 double spaced pages. You must type all assignments and make full use

of spell check/grammar check features. We will not waste time trying to interpret poor grammar. Thank you for

your understanding.

All assignments must be in APA format. We do not require cover sheets, but you must use appropriate section

headings and references.

Group Work
Assignment 1 is the first stage of your research project. Each assignment will be incorporated into your final

paper and presentation. Thus, you will be expected to work with the same people for the remaining assignments if

you choose to work in a group.

Grading
The assignment is worth 25 points. You will be graded on how well you describe the research topic, how well you

describe the importance of the research topic, and the clarity of your research question. Furthermore, you will

be assessed on how well you summarize the article as described below and your critique of the study. Finally, you

will be graded on how well your hypothesis answers the research question and is supported by empirical research.

Directions
Write a document describing your research topic, specific research question, and proposed hypothesis. Be sure to

cite the research, and background information you use from course materials and/or research articles you have

found using both in-text citations and a reference page.

Research question:
o Describe the gender issue you will research this semester.
o What specific question are you asking about gender (e.g., what experience, behavior, attitude, etc do you think

might differ for men and women)?
o Be sure you specify the context and population you will be investigating.
o Why do you think your topic is important to the study of gender?

Literature Review: Choose a journal article about a gender research study of interest to you. The article you

choose must come from a peer-reviewed, scholarly journal, and must have been published in the last 10 years.

Please choose an article where research was actually conducted. The article MUST be about gender research. Do not

choose article critiques or reviews.

• Description of the article’s research question and hypothesis or predictions. You will need in-text citation

here).
o What were the researchers asking? What did they think they would find? Remember, this may not be clearly stated

in the article, but you must explain the author’s purpose in your summary.
• Description of the article’s sample (participants used in the study) and recruitment.
o How many participants were there? What were their ages, gender, SES, and ethnicities? How were they recruited?

Were there any incentives to participate?
• Description of the article’s method of data collection.
o What research method did they use? What research design did they use? This may or may not be explicitly stated

in the research article. It will be your job to decipher what method and design they used based on your knowledge

of research methods learned in class.
• Did the researchers use surveys? Did they conduct interviews? Did they make observations? What groups did they

compare?
• Description of the article’s findings and relationship to gender.
o What were the major findings (e.g., differences or similarities between genders)?
o What did you learn about gender from reading this article?
• Critique of the research. Use critical thinking skills to identify the following:
o What were the strengths AND biases/confound variables of the study?
• Were there any confound variables that researchers didn’t control or take into account? Did the researchers

mention any limitations of the research? What did the researchers do well?
o You must be able to identify at least one strength and one bias/confound variable AND explain why you believe

these to be strengths and biases/confound variable.

Hypothesis
o What do you predict the outcome or answer to your research question will be?
o Make sure your hypothesis answers your research question.
o Support your prediction with research presented in your literature review – convince us you are doing more than

making a random guess. (Hint: You need an in-text citation here!)
