"The Story of an Hour"

reading 3 short stories and answering 3 questions with each story
We need to read 3 short stories in “Compact Literature Edition 8”. The short stories titles and page numbers and then the questions we need to answer below.

“The Story of an Hour”(205-206) by Kate Chopin

1. The story’s basic exposition is presented in its first two paragraphs. What additional information about the character or setting would you like to know? Why would that information be important to your understanding of the story? Why do you suppose Chopin does not supply this information?
2. What is the nature of the conflict in this story? Who, or what, do you see as Mrs. Mallard’s antagonist?

3. When “The Story of an Hour” was first published in Vogue magazine in 1894, the magazine’s editors titled it “The Dream of an Hour.” A film version, echoing the last words of the story, is called The Joy That Kills. Which of the three titles do you believe most accurately represents what happens in the story? Why?

“Deportation at Breakfast”(208-209) by Larry Fondation

4. The story’s first four paragraphs present the exposition. What information about the characters and setting is revealed here? What information is not revealed?

5. In paragraph 7, “the authorities” enter the diner and take the unresisting Javier to their car. Who are these “authorities”? How do you know?

6. What would you expect to happen in the diner at lunchtime? at dinner? the next day? the next week?

“A & P”(234-238) by John Updike

Reflection:

*Instead of answering two of the three questions for “A & P,” you may choose to write a reflection on either of the following topics. Your reflection should be at least three paragraphs. Describe a job that you decided to quit. Use specific details to describe the job as Updike did in “A & P.” or Define the kind of person Sammy is and what his attitudes toward the town, the A & P, and his “world” are.

7. Explain how the writer reveals Sammy’s belief that the three girls are in a different class than his own family. Use quoted evidence that reveals this belief.

8. List some of the most obvious physical characteristics of the A & P customers. How do these characteristics make them foils (definition 231) for Queenie and her friends?

9. In the last line of the story, Sammy says, “…and my stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter” (238). Why will Sammy’s world be hard after he quits his job? How do you envision his future, at least in the next year or so?

We need to also make sure we do the following below in each of the 3 courseworks above:

1. Number each answer, according to the numbers in the assignment.
2. Put the complete title (in quotation marks) and author’s name in the first paragraph of your first answer for that selection. You do not need to repeat the author’s name for each question if the author is the same.
3. Write one or two full paragraphs with quoted evidence.
