Preterm labor and cervical incompetence: The use of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool.
Literature Review. This addresses minimum criteria as well as some additional elements intended to assist you with constructing a well- rounded, comprehensive, yet concise document.
The aim of this assessment task is to provide a critical summary of research on your topic of interest. It will provide the basis for the argument or point of view you will put forward later in your research grant proposal to support your chosen research question(s) and methodology. As such, it will need to be concise yet critically informative.
The word limit on this assessment is limited. This is set so that you work to provide a concise and critical review that will be suitable, with some revisions, for inclusion in your research grant proposal. Research grant proposals often have very limited word counts.
Note: When you write your paper remember to consider your audience. In this case, write in a manner that the examiner from another discipline will understand the significance of your research.
Cover page
This includes student name, student number, course, assignment topic, semester, year, due date, and lecturer.
Abstract
An abstract should provide a brief outline the topic you are addressing, the aim or objectives in the review, methods used, results and conclusions (max. 250 words).
Introduction
This section will provide a clear and succinct introduction of the topic and outline the direction of the paper. Also important to identify why the topic is important, any patient and/or health service issues / considerations, and the aim of the literature review (approx. 200 words).
Methods
Briefly identify your search strategy, eg, what databases you used and search criteria (approximately 100 words).
Discussion
This is the body of the paper and should take up the majority of your word count. A good literature review should examine relevant references to the topic. Use topic headings and subheadings to reflect what this section is discussing. You will want to provide a logical presentation of your findings. This section may be organized chronologically, thematically or methodologically (see link below for further discussion).
Use strong and credible references that come from peer review journals, national peak bodies, government agencies for example. Indicate why certain studies are important. If identifying a classic or landmark study, identify it as such. The review should provide a critical appraisal
of current approaches and/or literature on the topic. You will want to compare and contrast different approaches, evaluate research methods, look for inconsistencies and ethical issues, and results. Summarize the overall findings and identify the gap(s) in the evidence. Towards the end you will provide a statement regarding the state of evidence, or lack of, regarding your topic and propose possible research question(s) or hypotheses for future study (approx. 1000 words).
Conclusion
This section should provide a clear and succinct conclusion that outlines the main points and brings the argument to a logical close. It presents no new material, offers a summation of ideas, draws together the discussion and offers your ‘position’ drawn from the discussion in the body of the paper (approx. 200 words).
References
Use a good and broad use of credible references (HD level: 20 references including 15 peer reviewed). Please make sure they are current (eg., contemporary references
are generally considered less than 10 years old maximum). Older references should only be used if they are necessary for your critical review of the literature and making your argument for future research. Seminal works should not be omitted. Make sure your references are relevant and credible. (HD level: Consistently integrates up-to-date references to support and reflect all ideas and factual information.)
