The World Comes to America

Essay Assignment: The World Comes to America

Option I: basic three page essay: For this option you would write an essay on a major theme you see in our second small book, The World Comes to America.

Keys to success for either option:

  1. Read the introduction and read various parts of the book you find interesting.
  2. Notice how America’s recent immigration history relates to our culture, economics, and politics.
  3. Notice how the book adds to your understanding of events or themes we have covered in the class (growth of cities, labor movement, poverty, foreign policy, cultural identity, etc.).
  4. Use information from various parts of The World Comes to America.
  5. When you write, put in a page number for any quote or any piece of specific information you use.

Additional instructions for Option I:

  1. In your first paragraph, introduce your main point and give a brief overview of what you will cover in the essay.
  2. Write the essay in short paragraphs (about three to five sentences each).
  3. Try to use at least twelve quotes or pieces of specific information from the book that will help develop your main point.
  4. In your conclusion, state the main ideas you want the reader to walk away with. Say how you see this book enriching our understanding of America.

Additional instructions for Option II:

  1. Write the journal in segments. Each segment includes you observations or reflections on a particular part of the book. A segment might be just half a page or a page long.
  2. Mention specific information in the book that helps shape your observations (give page numbers).
  3. For each part of the book you discuss, tell how the section adds to our understanding of America.

Themes you might explore the journal or the essay….these are just ideas…

“American immigration since World War II has been closely tied to American politics.”

“Every group of recent immigrants has had its own story, with just a few common threads.”

“The challenges facing immigrants in recent times are similar to challenges in earlier times.”

(You could use the Roark book, especially Chapter 20, for insights on earlier times.)

America showed vision in its immigration policy in the 1960s; at other times the country has been divided by conflicting priorities.”

“Immigrant groups have joined the larger society while also maintaining their own identities.”
