Theater Writing Assignment
Theater productions incorporate the various arts (art, music, and theater) that we will discuss this semester. Choose a play from the list provided, or have your selection cleared with the instructor. Go see the play of your choice and begin thinking about its relationship to art and music (possibly literature), i.e. set designs, lighting, costumes, sounds, music, etc.
You will research your play – themes, writer, and other significant facts, i.e. historical, to present a context for the contemporary/ modern play or modern adaptation of historical play of your choice.
Questions/ ideas to consider in your writing:
1. How was viewing a play different or similar to listening to music, or attending a concert? How does a play engage you differently than viewing a piece of art? Brainstorm multiple differences and similarities that these situations create
2. Major theme concept of the play. How does this relate to themes in art? Examples may include feminism, politics, nature, man versus machine, etc. Find artists or other playwrights that include those same overlying themes.
2. The majority of your paper should involve your sensory experience: language, your visual experience (lighting, color, value, shape, pattern, and other motifs), and sound.
3. Historical perspective – research the playwright. What is he or she noted for? Read reviews of the playwright to get a sense of the current play you are writing about. Is he or she more interested in creating a spectacle, or is he or she critiquing our society? This research should take up anywhere from a half to a full.
You will proceed to write a paper based on your research and sensory experience. Consider that your classmates may not be familiar with the particular play you choose to see. Begin with explaining your selection; give a brief overview of the play, highlighting important aspects. Place your selection within the timeline of theatrical performances (i.e. when was your play written, and what may have prompted such a play to be created.), and answer the previous stated questions.
Your final document should be in accordance with the Chicago Manual style of writing, and be three to four pages, double spaces, excluding the Works Cited Page.
